MIARC Studio • Little (kid) Big Box: Boys & Girls Club • Winter 2012
A design for a Boys & Girls Club in Springfield, OR: emphasizing safety, visibility, flexibility and play. The conceptual scheme is "Little Boxes" which represents the time-table based nature of the B&GC program and plays off the idea of little boxes (program elements) that sit within the large box (existing structure). The spaces are shaped (through materials and form) to create visibility through the building, connecting teen and kid spaces and to open up sight lines for safety and observation. There is an emphasis on the shared program elements, the kitchen and dining space and these are located in the heart of the structure. Bright colors represent different spatial zones and amplify the concept of play.
